Pit Bull Dog Bites
Pit bulls are a popular dog breed in Seattle, Kirkland, Olympia, Bellingham, and throughout Washington State. This breed of dog is one of the more aggressive dog breeds that exist and are responsible, as of last year, for over half of all deaths that are the result of dog bite attacks. While not every pit bull is dangerous or is guaranteed to attack people, they are statistically the most likely to attack someone.Pit Bull Facts and Considerations
There are a number of different kinds of pit bulls, to say nothing of the mutt pit bulls that exist. Among the more common ones are:
- The American pit bull terrier
- The American Staffordshire terrier
- The American Staffordshire bull terrier
While the pit bull breed has been around since at least the 1600’s, by the 1830’s the pit bull had been bred to become a compact dog that was very muscular, powerful, with incredible jaw strength, and aggressive as it had been bred to fight other dogs.
In 1884, the American Kennel club did not admit the pit bull because of its past use in dog fighting. Again, through intentional breeding, pit bulls have acquired very powerful jaw strength that is intended to impose enormous damage when the dog’s jaw gets a hold of someone or something. Pit bull bites are almost like shark bites in that they bite deeply and shake, which caused the tearing of tissue and muscle.
Pit bulls tends to be one foot five inches and weigh between thirty to eighty-five pounds, though some can weigh as much, if not more than, one hundred pounds, especially if they have been bred with other breeds. They have long lives and can live anywhere from twelve to sixteen years.
Pit bulls dog, especially the American pit bull terrier, is not a good a dog for people who do not have time for them. Ideally, they should be trained and socialized when they are puppies. It is ideal to have a pit bull terrier kept on a leash when in a public place to make sure the dog is not aggressive towards other dogs or people. Since the pit bull was bred to have a powerful bite, it is a good idea to have a chew toy or something durable for the dog to bite.Pit Bulls and Children
It is not advisable to leave a small child alone and unsupervised with any kind of dog, especially a pit bull. Pit bulls should be put in a kennel or fenced off from a child. This becomes doubly important when the pit bull reaches sexual maturity.
Small children not be allowed to pull on a dog’s tail or a dog’s ears. It is always not a good idea to have a child touch, pet, play with, or interact with a pit bull while the dog is eating or drinking. Most important, pit bulls should be supervised at all times by their owners when in the presence of small children.Insurance Considerations
If you have been attacked by a pit bull, you are likely wondering who will be paying your medical bills, your lost wages (assuming you’ve missed time at work), and your overall settlement for your injuries. The payout for all of these damages should be paid by the homeowner’s insurance or renter’s insurance policy for the dog’s owner. Hopefully, you can reach an out of court settlement with the homeowner, but if you cannot, you will have to file a lawsuit against the homeowner.
This lawsuit will not list the homeowner’s insurance company on the lawsuit, but for practical purposes, they will be the ones you will be negotiating with, not the homeowner. Be aware that insurance policies have limits on how much they can pay out.
This is determined by the size of the policy the homeowner or renter purchased. In other words, if the homeowner only purchased a one-million-dollar policy, that’s all the insurance there is available. Even if you believe your case is worth ten million dollars, legally one million is the most the insurance company has to pay out.

- Medical bills paid
- Future medical bills, including money set aside for future care and surgeries

We can do this by obtaining dog registration materials, getting a police or animal control report, records from the vet the dog saw, and obtaining an expert on dog bites who can state how the dog attack occurred in the first place.
We will do everything within our power to negotiate with the insurance company for the dog’s owner. We have a tremendous track record of obtaining successful settlements with insurance companies. However, sometimes negotiations stall with the insurance company. If this happens, we will take your case to trial and do everything possible to make sure you obtain a large verdict for your injuries.
